Science

The Science department is a passionate and enthusiastic group of staff who demand the best from students, but also want to make the learning of Science fun and inspiring.

We are very well equipped with 11 bright and spacious laboratories, a seminar room and 2 preparation areas. The Science team is made up of 6 Biology teachers, 5 Chemistry teachers, 4 Physics teachers and 3 technicians. One of our teachers is also a teacher of the deaf. All teachers work within their specialism for GCSE and A level teaching.

We pride ourselves on the support we offer to students, both within lessons but also at break times and beyond the school day. We also like to offer extra-curricular activities such as our exciting 'Science Day', the regular Science club, a GCSE Astronomy class and many other trips and visits for all age groups.

Course Outlines:

Key Stage 3

We follow a three-year course that has been developed within the department with the intention of developing key scientific skills alongside covering the Key Stage 3 programme of study.

Key Stage 4

Students can take three different pathways in years 10 and 11.

Path 1 leads to separate science qualifications in GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics. We follow the AQA specifications.

Path 2 covers GCSE Science A in year 10 (AQA) followed by GCSE Additional Science in year 11 (AQA).

Path 3 covers BTEC Applied Science (Edexcel).

Key Stage 5

Our 3 A level Science courses are popular and successful. Each subject is taught by highly-qualified and specialist staff. The 3 courses are A level Biology (OCR), A level Chemistry A (OCR) and A level Physics B (Advancing Physics, OCR).
